Year 7 Explore Identity, Migration and the SDGs

Throughout this year, Year 7 subjects have been paired to build skills and create authentic links between their curriculum and one of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The History department worked with the Thai faculty and focused on SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, particularly its target of ensuring legal identity for all. In History, students study the ancient Silk Road through themes of migration, globalisation and the exchange of ideas, while the Thai curriculum centres on identity. These complementary themes allowed students to explore the issue of statelessness in Thailand, examining why legal identity matters and how the lack of it affects individuals and communities. This created meaningful connections between migration in History and identity in Thai, deepening students’ understanding of the challenges faced by stateless groups today.

The project also highlighted Global Citizenship, a core Bangkok Patana value. By engaging with real-world issues, students strengthened not only their academic understanding but also their appreciation of diversity, inclusivity, empathy and responsibility, qualities essential for contributing to a more just and equitable world.

To demonstrate their learning in an impactful way, students planned and hosted two cultural exhibitions for the Bangkok Patana community. These events raised awareness about statelessness in Thailand while celebrating the cultures of affected groups, showcasing clothing, cuisine, language and beliefs. This linked neatly to the spread of ideas along the Silk Roads and the importance of identity across societies. We are incredibly proud of the effort, insight and skills shown by Year 7, which will serve them well in future learning and projects. Great job, Year 7!
