Planning Ahead: Skills for Life Beyond School
Preparing for the Professional World
IBCP Business specialist students studying for their “Career Planning” unit have recently been putting their skills into practice through a series of mock job interviews. This unit focuses on helping learners understand their strengths, explore career opportunities and develop the skills needed to succeed in the workplace.
As part of their coursework, students researched potential career paths, identified the qualifications and experience required and reflected on their own personal skill sets. They then applied this knowledge by preparing professional CVs and practicing interview techniques.
The highlight of the unit so far has been the mock interview experience. Students took part in realistic interview scenarios, responding to common employer questions and demonstrating their communication skills under pressure. This provided a valuable opportunity to experience what real recruitment processes feel like.
Following the interviews, students completed detailed reviews, reflecting on their performance and identifying areas for improvement. This process of reflection is a key part of the unit, helping students to set meaningful targets and refine their career plans.
Overall, the career planning unit equips students with practical, transferable skills that will support them in future applications, whether for university or future employment. It’s been encouraging to see students grow in confidence and professionalism as they take important steps towards their future goals.
