Bringing Words to Life
Year 5’s Journey into Performance Poetry
What an amazing performance by the Year 5 Literary artists!
Year 5 have been working on a Performance Poetry unit since last term that brought together creative writing, collaboration and dramatic movement. The project began with each student writing their own original poem, exploring imagery, rhythm, mood and voice. They experimented with different poetic devices, played with language and developed pieces that reflected their individual ideas, interests and personalities. Once their poems were complete, the children voted for the poem they felt would be the most effective and enjoyable to perform as a group. This step encouraged them to think carefully about what makes a poem engaging for an audience.
After selecting the poem, the work moved into the Drama studio, where the classes shifted their focus from writing to performing. In Drama lessons, students worked collaboratively to explore how movement, gesture, rhythm and spatial awareness could enhance the meaning of the poem. They experimented with formations, levels and pacing, devising dynamic sequences that matched the tone and imagery of the text. The emphasis was on teamwork, creativity and bringing the poem to life in a physical, memorable way.
Throughout the process, students developed confidence in performing, improved their communication skills, and strengthened their ability to work as an ensemble. The final recital showcased not only their understanding of performance poetry, but also their ability to combine spoken word with expressive movement. The result was a powerful and highly creative group performance that highlighted their hard work, imagination and collaborative spirit. A big well done to these Year 5 Bangkok Patana students!
