An Ocean of Ideas: Learning with Gail Clarke
Bringing Underwater Stories to Life
We were delighted to welcome author Gail Clarke to Bangkok Patana Primary School, where her workshops empowered our youngest learners to see themselves as true authors, illustrators and storytellers. Through her lively storytelling and captivating creative provocations, Gail invited children to dive deep into the mysterious world beneath the ocean’s surface. With curiosity as their compass, students brought their ideas to life through purposeful mark making, expressive drawing and joyful collaborative creation.
Building on Gail’s visit, and our ongoing ocean inquiry, children designed their own imaginative under‑the‑sea creatures. They carefully considered each creature’s features, habitat and personality, exploring how details and design choices contribute to meaning. Every mark mattered: bold sweeping strokes suggested movement, intricate lines revealed character, and expressive shapes conveyed emotion. In this process, children discovered that writing begins long before letters; through ideas, symbols and representation. Their marks became powerful tools for telling stories.
This experience highlights our commitment in the Primary School to nurturing children as capable, creative thinkers. Through our Teaching and Learning Practices, we champion participation by valuing every child’s voice and crafting learning experiences that are immersive, meaningful and connected. Gail’s visit enriched this environment even further, strengthening children’s confidence, oracy and identity as emerging authors.
Most importantly, the children realised their ideas matter. They saw themselves not just as consumers of stories, but as creators—authors with imagination, purpose and pride in their work. We are excited to see how this inspiration continues to shape their storytelling journey in the weeks ahead.
