Heart of the Matter
A Memorable Science Experience in Year 6
In Year 6 Science, the exploration of a pig’s heart provided an exciting and highly memorable practical experience that linked closely to the Biology curriculum. As part of the topic on the circulatory system, srudents had the opportunity to see first-hand the structure and function of the heart, moving beyond diagrams and models in textbooks. The activity allowed children to make direct connections between scientific vocabulary, such as ventricles, atria, valves and arteries, and the real-life organ in front of them.
This was a powerful way of consolidating knowledge, enabling students to identify the parts of the heart, understand how blood flows through it, and discuss how the structure supports its vital function in the body. The students were engaged throughout the activity, asking thoughtful questions and making links to their prior learning about oxygen, nutrients and the transport of blood. For many, this was their first time encountering such a practical investigation, which sparked curiosity and deepened their understanding of how science is applied in real contexts.
The experience also supported cross-curricular learning, connecting with health education and discussions around lifestyle choices, such as diet and exercise, that can affect heart health. The children expressed genuine enjoyment and fascination.
Overall, the pig heart exploration brought the curriculum to life, promoted scientific enquiry skills and left the students with a sense of excitement and motivation for learning science.
