Year 6 learn about the Circulatory System

This week, Year 6 pupils embarked on an engaging interdisciplinary journey, linking Science and Humanities through an exploration of the circulatory system.

The initiative began with an immersive digital experience designed to ignite curiosity and deepen understanding of this vital bodily function. Using Minecraft Education, students navigated a bespoke virtual environment showcasing the heart, blood vessels and blood cells. The Minecraft platform introduced key scientific terminology and allowed pupils to visualise the movement of blood throughout the body. The gamified setting provided a memorable and playful approach to grasping complex biological processes.

The second phase of the event saw pupils step into the role of medics during a CPR workshop. Here, they learned the importance of cardiopulmonary resuscitation and its role in supporting the circulatory system during emergencies. With guidance, the children practised chest compressions and mastered timing techniques—some aided by well-known musical rhythms—gaining a potentially life-saving skill while reinforcing their understanding of the heart’s function.

Both activities offered hands-on learning that brought the topic vividly to life. Pupils left the session brimming with questions and enthusiasm, eager to delve further into the science of how their bodies own bodies keep them alive and healthy. Year 6 will build on this knowledge as we continue their science journey this term.
