The Secret Life of Seeds

The Secret Life of Seeds

Year 2 Science in Action

As part of the Year 2 Science topic on plants and their survival, students stuck their hands in to explore the captivating world of seed dispersal. The session tied directly to the students’ in-class learning, offering a practical extension of how plants ensure their seeds reach new homes.

The highlight of the workshop was when students tested real seeds—like “helicopter” seeds—that spiral through the air. Tossing them skyward, the children watched in awe as they glided and landed far from the “tree,” demonstrating the power of wind dispersal and making real their theoretical knowledge.

The students also had a lively discussion about animals, focusing on how monkeys and birds disperse seeds by eating fruit and, yes, later “dropping” them. Luckily, the students didn’t act this out….but now they understand that animals play a key role in spreading seeds far and wide.

The workshop sparked curiosity and deeper understanding. By the end, our budding scientists had a clear view of some of the ways plants ingeniously ensure their survival—and had a lot of fun doing it!

A big thank you to Dan Goustan Bodin of Growing Learning Gardens, from Bang Krachao, for his brilliant, enthusiastic sessions. More information about his work can be found here: Grow Learning Garden
