Tales Around the Campfire

A Storytelling Adventure …

What happens when an ancient scroll, a flickering campfire, a greedy king, a speedy hare and a determined tortoise arrive in the Year 4 classroom? A storytelling adventure, of course!

Last week, Year 4 stepped into the world of fables, exploring how stories have been used for generations to entertain, educate and pass on important lessons. We began our journey gathered around a campfire, just as people have done for centuries. Before books were widely available, stories were often shared by word of mouth, passed from one generation to the next. They helped communities share experiences, explain the world around them and teach younger generations important lessons about life.

With the campfire setting the scene, an ancient scroll revealed the tale of King Midas and his extraordinary wish. As the story unfolded, the children listened carefully for its message: be careful what you wish for, as greed can lead to unhappiness. They discovered that fables are more than entertaining stories; they carry morals that can remain meaningful long after the story has been told.

As students explored King Midas and The Tortoise and the Hare, they made connections to their previous learning about Grendel. They considered the characters, their flaws and the choices they made, noticing how these decisions can drive a story forward and shape its ending. They then became story detectives, returning to the text to identify the key characters and events and summarising the story in their own words.

Through this learning, Year 4 are developing their skills as thoughtful readers and storytellers. They are discovering that storytelling is more than reading words on a page; it is a tradition that connects generations, preserves ideas and helps us pass important lessons from one generation to the next.
