The IB Biology Journey
Turning Pages, Opening Minds
In Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, he observes, “Once you have learned to read, you will be forever free.”
Year 12 SL Biology students explored that freedom as they delved into the Library’s new collection of contemporary biology books. This selection featuring authors such as Philip Ball and Paul Nurse, captures the evolving paradigms of twenty-first-century biology.
Although we often assume students spend all their time online, many can be found throughout the day turning real pages in the Library, in classrooms and at home. Such intellectual freedom is encouraged through the expertise of the Library staff, who use their particular skills to curate specific collections to complement classroom learning.
A critical skill for an IB student is research, sourcing and accessing appropriate published work, but then also acknowledging that work through proper citation and bibliography. These skills are directly assessed for Group 4 students with their Internal course work which often accounts for as much as 20% of the final examination mark.
