Year 1s Float the Boat

Year 1s Float the Boat

A Bear-y Fun STEM Challenge!

Each week, Year 1 students dive into a brand-new challenge that sparks curiosity and creativity. This term, they’ve already built towering structures, bridged gaps between tables and even engineered a working zipline!

Last week on World Peace Day, the students embarked on a new task – Design a boat that could carry a bear – and float! Armed with tin foil, plasticine and a few surprise materials like art straws, students teamed up to create their floating masterpieces. There was plenty of splashing, sinking and cheering as boats were tested in water. Some floated like champions, others… well, let’s just say they made a splash!

After the excitement, students reflected on the skills they used, like teamwork, problem-solving and perseverance. These weekly challenges are more than just fun; they help students build independence, confidence and creativity in a hands-on, playful way.
