Year 13s Thinking Like Real Business Leaders

Year 13s Thinking Like Real Business Leaders

Preparing for Paper 1

Year 13 Business Management students have officially launched into preparations for their final Paper 1 examination — a major milestone for both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL) learners. Unlike traditional exams that simply reward memorisation, Paper 1 challenges students to think like real business leaders. They must apply the theories, tools, and concepts they have mastered throughout the course to a genuine business scenario, analyse complex issues and present well‑reasoned, evidence‑based judgements.

This exam centres on a pre‑released case study, which students recently received. Having early access gives them time to fully immerse themselves in the business, its sector and the terminology that surrounds it, supported by their teacher and classmates. In the exam, they are presented with new information about the business and must respond to a blend of short and extended questions. These questions test a range of essential skills, from problem‑solving and data interpretation to evaluation, often using frameworks such as SWOT analysis, decision‑making tools and key financial or operational concepts.

For the May 2026 session, the case study is titled Abraca (ABC). Abraca is a major concrete manufacturer operating in a fictional country, but the issues it faces are very real. The case delves into contemporary business challenges, including environmental concerns, sustainability efforts, recycling initiatives, and rising cost pressures. These themes mirror the dilemmas many global manufacturers encounter today, particularly those striving to reduce carbon emissions while maintaining responsible production.

Ultimately, success in Paper 1 comes from more than knowing business theory — it depends on understanding the company’s context, selecting the right analytical tools, and clearly justifying decisions. By design, Paper 1 encourages students to practise the type of critical, practical thinking they will need beyond the classroom, equipping them not just for an exam, but for real business environments.
