Year 5 Boils it Down!

Year 5 Boils it Down!

Science in Action

In a spirited foray into the world of Secondary School, Year 5 students donned lab coats and stepped into the Secondary Science laboratories full of curiousity and excitement to learn more from their Term 3 unit of learning’ Water, Water Everywhere’.

The visit built upon a recent experiment conducted in their Primary Science lab, where students successfully separated salt from water. This time, the challenge was more sophisticated: how to reclaim water once it has evaporated. Guided by curiosity and a hands-on approach, the young learners explored the principles of condensation, discovering how vapour can be cooled and transformed back into liquid using a cooling chamber.

Working in small groups, the students tested their skills on a range of solutions, including copper sulphate, ethanol and salt. Observations were meticulously recorded, results compared and conclusions drawn—an early taste of the rigour and excitement that scientific inquiry demands.

Yet beyond the technical learning, the visit offered something more intangible: a sense of wonder. As they left the labs, chatter filled the corridors—evidence of minds sparked and imaginations stirred. For these budding scientists, the journey into Secondary School has begun not just with knowledge, but sparked with enthusiasm and a thirst for discovery.
