Year 13 SEHS Students Master Mind and Body Through Innovative Training

Can you handle it?

Year 13 Sport, Exercise and Health Science (SEHS) students transformed theory into practice through two remarkable sessions that challenged both mind and body as part of their Mental Toughness syllabus.

Last Monday, students embarked on an unconventional journey into Psychological Skills Training, trading textbooks for tranquility in the Dance Studios. Through an immersive Sound Bath experience, they explored meditation and mindfulness techniques essential for developing mental resilience. The therapeutic vibrations and ambient sounds provided the perfect environment for students to practice focus, breathing control, and stress management – fundamental psychological skills that elite athletes rely upon.

Wednesday saw the Higher Level students put their newly acquired psychological tools to the ultimate test during their Fatigue and Recovery session. Under the guidance of Mrs Dale, they faced a circuit in the Shark Tank Gym, featuring eccentric-focused weighted muscular contractions that challenged their physical limits.

The real test of “mind over matter” came next: an ice bath recovery session that demanded every ounce of mental toughness. Students used their Sound Bath mindfulness training to maintain composure and breathing control while their bodies adapted to the extreme cold therapy. Well, some did better than others with this…more training required for the boys!

This innovative approach to learning demonstrates how theoretical knowledge becomes meaningful when applied practically. By experiencing both the psychological preparation and physical demands that athletes face, our Year 13 SEHS students gained invaluable insights into the intricate relationship between mental toughness and physical performance.
