Year 5 Book Lovers Unite

The Journey to the Readers’ Cup Grand Final

Teams of book-loving students took part in our annual Readers’ Cup battling their way for a place on the stage for the Grand Final; diligently reading books and swapping notes until the very last minute.

This year’s Readers’ Cup began back in December when Ms Tracey, our Cross Campus Teacher Librarian introduced the contest to Year 5 students, sharing the titles of the 10 books they would be devouring over the coming months. Through their reading, the children were taken on epic adventures: they explored the markets of Chiang Mai in the beautiful novel ‘Tua and the Elephant’, zoomed through facts about space and science in the non-fiction text ‘Can You Get Rainbows in Space?’, and walked the city streets of Berlin in ‘Emil and the Detectives’.

Over the weeks, excitement for the competition built and Year 5’s love of reading became more and more apparent, as students were to be overheard discussing characters and plot points in the corridors and playground. When the semi-finals came around, quizzes in the classroom and Primary Library decided which teams would represent their class in the final.

On the day of the final, eight teams proudly took to the stage to answer questions about each book, whilst their classmates cheered them on. Over the next 90 minutes, students took part in the ‘Multiple-choice round’, ‘Ask the Audience round’ and the ‘Mystery Book choice round’. After a nail-biting tie-break, our winners were revealed…

A huge cheer rang out as 5C’s ‘Pink Panthers’ lifted the trophy and the rest of the class joined them to celebrate.

Congratulations to them and all of the teams, you surely made your Year 5 teachers very proud.
