Forget the Bears… We’re Going On a Snail Hunt! 

There were some very excited Year 2 scientists this week as they headed outside for a snail hunt! Armed with curious minds and keen eyes, the students explored our outdoor spaces, searching high and low for these tiny creatures. 

As part of Primary Science learning about habitats and microhabitats, the students have been exploring what different living things need to survive and thrive. The snail hunt provided the perfect opportunity to take this learning beyond the classroom and investigate a real habitat right on our doorstep. 

After exploring the story ‘The Snail and the Whale’ in the writing lessons, the students were eager to become snail experts, carefully searching our outdoor environment to discover where snails like to live. They looked closely at the places they found snails and considered what these locations might tell us about their needs. 

There was plenty of excitement, curiosity and careful observation as the children explored, discussed their discoveries and shared their ideas with one another. This kind of real-world experience allows children to learn from the environment around them and develop their understanding through genuine investigation. 

The students are looking forward to using their findings to design the perfect habitat for a snail. We can’t wait to see what our budding habitat designers create!
