Game, Set and Well-Matched
Key Stage 3 Tennis at Patana
Key Stage 3 students have begun the academic year on court, following the move of our curriculum tennis units to Term 1A. This change allows us to make full use of our eight beautiful, covered courts, which hold an ITF Certified Level 1 rating, and gives students an energetic, purposeful start to their PE programme.
Each lesson is led by two specialist tennis coaches and two PE teachers. With each adult working across just two courts, students benefit from excellent levels of feedback, more opportunities to practise and teaching that can be carefully matched to their stage of development.
The structure makes meaningful differentiation achievable. Beginners can build confidence through modified court spaces and clear technical progressions, while more experienced players are challenged to apply their skills with greater consistency, accuracy and tactical awareness. Smaller groups also allow teachers and coaches to respond quickly to individual needs and help every student experience success.
“When excellent facilities, engaged and motivated students, and world-class coaching come together, it creates the perfect recipe for high-quality PE lessons. The programme also encourages valuable two-way professional learning between the tennis coaches and PE teachers, creating a genuine buzz at the start of the academic year,” said Head Tennis Coach Dan Ahl.
Tennis is an ideal activity with which to start the year. It is a technical game that rewards concentration and perseverance, while developing agility, coordination and physical fitness. Through paired practices, rallies and competitive activities, students also learn to communicate, collaborate and demonstrate increasing agency in their learning.
“I have really enjoyed the variety of warm-up games, challenges and competitions, as well as the opportunity to get to know students from both classes. The fantastic setting, the consistently high levels of energy and effort from students, and adults have made every lesson a great experience,” said PE Teacher Shane Owen.
Most importantly, the new timing creates the conditions for students to enjoy the game from their first PE lessons of the year. As the year unfolds, we look forward to seeing students build on this positive start and embrace the many further opportunities that await them across the Key Stage 3 PE programme.
