J. Elaine Brings Broadway Magic to Students

Step by Step..

J. Elaine, a seasoned performer with a rich career in musical theatre, recently led a workshop that transported our JV and Varsity Dance Academy students straight into the world of A Chorus Line. As she guided them through the original choreography, she shared her deep connection with the musical. “I started as a dancer first, and this show is all about dancers,” she explained. “It’s also about being an artist—singing, acting, and telling stories.”

For many students, the moves felt unfamiliar at first, but J. Elaine saw the excitement grow. “Once that music starts, you can feel the energy shift. They go from ‘I don’t know this style’ to ‘I love dance, no matter what!’” she said.

J. Elaine’s own journey into theatre began with an unexpected twist. She once thought she’d be an accountant—until she saw Miss Saigon. “Seeing Filipino performers on stage made me think, ‘I could do that!’” she recalled. She pursued training at AMDA, determined to master singing, dancing, and acting. That dedication paid off when she landed her first big role as Connie Wong in A Chorus Line—and later, she proved she could break industry stereotypes by playing a traditionally non-Asian role in the same show.

For students considering a future in the performing arts, J. Elaine offered real talk. “This career isn’t easy. There will be times when you’re not working. But training keeps you ready for the next opportunity,” she advised.

Dance student Plern, who had worked with J. Elaine before, admired her energy. “She’s fun and engaging but keeps everything connected to the lesson,” she said. After the workshop, she walked away with a new skill—spotting, a technique to maintain balance during turns.

Beyond Broadway, J. Elaine is now starring in Drag: The Musical, a show that blends comedy with an important message of acceptance. “Theatre is more than entertainment. It’s a way to create change,” she said.

With her passion and experience, J. Elaine didn’t just teach dance steps—she inspired students to dream bigger.
