Bringing Life of Pi to Life: A Theatre Residency with A&E Comedy
An act of struggle, perseverance and survival
Over three incredible days, selected students from Years 6, 9, 10 and 12 embarked on a transformative theatre residency inspired by Life of Pi. Guided by the exceptional Abigail Dooley and Emma Edwards of A&E Comedy Theatre, students immersed themselves in imaginative storytelling, creative collaboration, and innovative stagecraft.
The drama studio became a world of wonder, where a garland of balloons — illuminated by torchlight —transformed into floating clouds, drifting jellyfish or whatever the audience envisioned. Shadow puppetry brought oceanic creatures to life, while intricate crafting sessions produced a majestic whale’s tail, shimmering fish and other sea life.
Beyond the technical artistry, students explored the novel’s profound themes of struggle, perseverance and survival. Each participant demonstrated remarkable focus and ingenuity, working together to bring this powerful story to the stage. Through workshops and rehearsals, they learned not just how to perform, but how to create and collaborate, embodying the spirit of the novel itself.
Watching these young artists develop their ideas with such passion was truly inspiring. Their dedication and energy culminated in a captivating performance that honored the essence of Life of Pi.
