Team GB Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Comes to Bangkok Patana

Women’s Wheelchair Paralympians give a workshop in wheelchair basketball.

Two women from the Great Britain Women’s Wheelchair Basketball team visited Bangkok Patana and gave students from Years 5, 6 and 9 a glimpse into the world of wheelchair basketball.

The Under 25 Captain Joy Haizleden and her teammate Siobhan Fitzpatrick conducted a workshop for our students, which started off with both inspirational women sharing their stories and what Wheelchair Basketball has meant to them. Their team currently holds silver medal from the World Championships in 2018 last year, came in fourth in the Paralympics in the last Olympicsand are looking forward to the qualifiers for the Olympics this summer where they hope to earn their place at the Tokyo Paralympics 2020.

Year 5 and 6 students lined up for a chance to score a basket from the wheelchair, finding out that it is really very difficult! Joy, Year 6 said, “It would be a lot more fun with more practice!”

After a quick safety briefing, the Year 9 students were able to try wheelchair basketball in a mini-game. It’s not easy to manoeuvre the chair and score baskets! It was a fantastic experience for all involved and I’m sure we’ll all be cheering on Joy, Siobhan and the Team GB as they prepare for the Paralympics!
