Beginning with Belonging

Starting Foundation Stage 1 is a big step for young children and their families. At three and four years old, the world can feel wonderfully big, and children are beginning to find their place within it. For us, the starting point is simple: Belonging.

“We know that children thrive when they feel safe, valued and connected,” says Carol Ashworth, Foundation Stage Leader. “Our priority is to create an environment where every child feels that they belong, because that sense of belonging gives them the confidence to explore, learn and build relationships with others.”

We want every child to feel known, valued and confident that they have a place in our community. This begins with the small things: learning and using children’s names, listening carefully to what they have to say, noticing their interests and celebrating what makes each child unique.

Strong, consistent relationships are at the heart of this. Warm welcomes, familiar routines and clear expectations help children to feel safe and secure, while high-quality teaching and thoughtful interactions give them the confidence to explore, communicate and learn.

Belonging also extends beyond the classroom. Our partnerships with families are essential. We value the knowledge that parents and carers bring about their children and create opportunities to share experiences, interests and important moments from home. Our Soft Start and Seesaw provide meaningful ways to build these connections and help us develop a fuller picture of each child.

When children feel that they are known, understood and valued, they are more ready to participate, take risks, build relationships and become independent learners.

In Foundation Stage, we believe that belonging comes first. It is the foundation from which curiosity, confidence, kindness and learning can grow and thrive.
