Ready, Set, Resist!
Develop running skills in Key Stage 2
In PE, Key Stage 2 students are developing a range of running skills, including agility, speed, reaction time and endurance. Through a variety of activities and challenges, they are learning how different types of running require different techniques and levels of control.
As part of their learning on resistance running, students are discovering the important role that arm drive, posture and leg power play when moving against an opposing force. Working with a partner, they use running parachutes to create resistance, simulating real-life situations such as running into a strong headwind. This allows them to experience how their bodies must work harder and adapt their technique to maintain speed and efficiency.
These practical activities not only build physical strength and stamina but also help students develop a deeper understanding of movement mechanics. By experimenting with different running conditions, they learn how athletes adjust their technique to maximise performance, while also improving teamwork, communication and resilience.
