Plants are truly incredible organisms and Year 8 are currently studying their life cycle in order to answer the big question: What adaptations have plants developed to guarantee successful reproduction and species continuation? Students have been doing a range of practical lessons from learning walks in the school grounds to classify different phyla of plants, studying biodiversity in the Outdoor Classroom in aquatic and terrestrial habitats, dissecting lilies to study the male and female reproductive organs, and going to the school kitchen classroom, to carefully observe a range of fruits and the varying size of seeds within them.
As we study the biology of plants and their life cycle, students have been astounded to learn that the colourful and sweet-smelling flowers are in fact the sexual reproductive organs of a another organism, and that delicious tasting fruits are made from the left-over ovaries, containing early embryos! Who knew there was so much to learn about the most abundant living things on this planet.
