The Day the Chairs Quit!

The Day the Chairs Quit!

It’s official .. they have quit indeed!

Year 4 students arrived at school expecting a normal day, but were met with complete shock as they entered their classrooms to discover that every single chair had disappeared! Chairs had been stacked high, warning tape surrounded parts of the classroom and “DO NOT TOUCH” signs had mysteriously appeared overnight. Confused and excited, the children quickly realised something unusual had happened.

The mystery deepened when the students discovered a dramatic letter addressed to Year 4 from the chairs themselves. The chairs announced that they had officially “quit” after years of being dragged across the floor, rocked backwards on and left untidy around the classroom. Gasps, laughter and disbelief filled the room as the children listened carefully to the chairs’ complaints and demands for more respect.

Inspired by the book Chairs on Strike by Jennifer Jones students explored the features of persuasive writing and discussed how powerful language can be used to convince an audience. Using the shocking events as inspiration, the children carefully planned persuasive response letters to apologise to the chairs and persuade them to return. They generated thoughtful arguments, ambitious vocabulary and imaginative ideas, ready for tomorrow’s independent write.

However, there is still one major problem… the chairs have not returned yet! Year 4 will now have to wait until tomorrow to see whether their persuasive letters are powerful enough to convince the chairs to come back to the classroom.
