Something mysterious took place in the Year 5 shared area..

The scene was unexpected when the children arrived on a Monday morning: a scattering of belongings, dense foliage and the unmistakable signs of a crash. Year 5 students were quickly called to investigate. They discovered what appeared to be the wreckage of a plane crash. Buzzing with curiosity, they began to explore, piecing together clues about what could have happened.

The children worked together, asking thoughtful questions and making predictions: Who was travelling on the plane? How did it crash? Where are they now? Could anyone have survived? Their imaginations were fired up as they examined the scene.

This mystery was linked to their Literacy unit, inspired by Katherine Rundell’s award-winning book The Explorer.

In this gripping story, four children are stranded deep in the Amazon rainforest after a plane crash. Through the entry point, students have had the chance to step into the scene, experiencing the wonder, danger and survival challenges of the rainforest setting. Over the weeks, they explored the text in detail, themes of resilience and friendship and produced a range of creative and thoughtful writing.

It was a great start to the children’s learning journey – one that left everyone eager to turn the first page.
