As part of their Science learning on ‘Properties and Changes in Materials’ Year 5 students visited the Primary Science Laboratory, where they took part in an introductory practical session centred on safe laboratory practice. Wearing their own perfectly-sized lab coats and safety goggles, the students approached the experience with curiosity and enthusiasm, eager to learn more about this specialist learning environment.

The session began with a focus on how to behave safely in a lab. Students then applied this knowledge through a carefully structured sequence of activities. In pairs, they practised lighting matches safely, before progressing to lighting wooden splints with control, accuracy and confidence. Building on this, they were introduced to the correct method of lighting a Bunsen burner – an experience that brought a real sense of achievement and excitement.

Once confident, students explored how adjusting the air regulator affects the flame, observing how the blue flame generates greater heat. This approach allowed them to connect theory with practice in a meaningful way.

The visit provided a strong foundation for upcoming learning, and students left motivated and keen to return to the lab to explore the combining and separating of materials in the weeks ahead.
