Paper Birds Drama Workshop
Students practice drama techniques with professional visitors
The Secondary Drama Department hosted a workshop by Paper Birds, a theatre company from the UK, in which students learned how to revolve their theatrical performances around serious topics. One such method is ‘devising’, a type of drama where the performer creates their own response to the topic or stimulus provided. Secondary students tried their hand at this in a group setting, and as two other schools were participating in the workshop, this created a new social environment for our drama students. The workshop leaders also introduced the idea of a custom script in which students created their own material based only on pictures and a speech by Greta Thunberg. Through the topic of Climate Change, students were able to explore deeper meanings, as well as how to symbolise and portray their message to the audience.
Our students appreciated the opportunity to meet Drama students from other schools and to work with the Paper Birds workshop leaders. Students also learned more about how their message can be adapted through collaboration with others. The workshop encouraged students to expand their creative abilities, to build their confidence through working with their peers and to improve their teamwork.
