Year 7s Move Along Silk Roads

Re-creating History..

Last term, Year 7 History students were learning about the origins and development of the Silk Roads. Their studies included some of the most important places along the Silk Roads and the key people who shaped the development of these global trading links. Using an extract from The Silk Roads by Peter Frankopan, students learnt about the ancient city of Baghdad during the Abbasid caliphate. This became the inspiration for Year 7s to design and build their own Silk Roads city, as part of their final challenge for this series of lessons. In their designs, students were encouraged to consider a range of inspiring features from cities along the historic Silk Roads; Thai architecture, Persian city planning, Roman fountains, Chinese gardens, Mongolian stables, Greek orchards, Arab bazaars, Italian ports, etc. Students were given the options to showcase their work through different media such as Minecraft, clay and Lego.

In Term 3, students came back to class excited to show what they’ve been working on during the holidays, from intricate cityscapes made out of clay to a 20 minute long video of a Minecraft city!
