Social Media and Well-being in School

Social and Emotional Counsellors met with parents to talk about how to use social media in a healthy way.

Social media is such a huge part of our daily lives and the importance of using it in a mentally and emotionally healthy way was the topic at the recent Counsellors’ meeting with parents. Secondary Social and Emotional counsellors covered the links between social media, technology and mental health. Teens spend a large amount of their time on social media and the internet and this can have a direct impact on their anxiety levels, depression and self-esteem.

Parents were encouraged to understand the benefits of social media as well as the issues. They also heard about how to positively parent their children in respect to the use of social media. The counsellors spoke to parents about school safeguarding guidelines regarding social media. Maintaining a healthy outlook and feeling of well-being by students and parents is of key importance, especially in these stressful times.
