Sustainable Snack Bars

Small steps toward big changes

Our Services Department and Year 4 students recently collaborated to improve sustainability in the snack bars. Taking these concrete steps toward promoting environmental friendliness is in line with both our whole school value of Global Citizenship, as well as our current One Green Goal campaign. Two ideas that have already been implemented are replacing plastic yogurt spoons with wooden spoons and using a staple-free stapler to seal pastry bags.

This Year 4 initiative was led by the Enrichment class as part of their project-based learning. Students began by surveying and observing both the Primary and Secondary snack bars to see what sustainability efforts were already being made. After brainstorming with their peers and with other staff, they spoke with the Services Department to share their ideas. As the journey toward sustainability is made up of countless small steps, our Year 4 students are determined to continue on the path – below are some of their other sustainability suggestions:

  • Using cardboard lids/cup for smoothies
  • Offering more fruit for sale on Fridays with “Fruit Friday”
  • Replacing plastic juice box straws with paper straws
  • Having a separate, small stand that only sells fruit

Our Services Department were pleased to work with the students and they in turn were pleasantly surprised that their ideas had been taken into consideration and action was taken so quickly! This demonstrates to our young students that their suggestions are taken seriously and that they are able to make a difference in our community.
