The Monkey and Demon Dance at Bangkok Patana

The Monkey and Demon Dance at Bangkok Patana

Year 12 and 13 learn the Thai Khon dance as part of their studies on world theatre traditions.

This week Year 12 and 13 students have had the privileged opportunity to be involved in a Thai Khon workshop, led by the brilliant Khun Saksom. He taught the students about the Thai theatre/dance tradition, introducing them to the fundamental performance conventions of the Monkey and Demon characters and then applying the conventions to a moment of theatre from the Ramakien. Students have been exploring what it means to be a world theatre maker. Learning Thai Khon has been a great way to gain an insight into the skills required for this challenging, yet beautiful Thai tradition as one of the global theatre traditions they are studying.
