Honouring Tradition Through Wai Kru

Year 7 students gathered in the Black Box last week for Bangkok Patana School’s annual Wai Kru ceremony, a tradition that gives students the opportunity to express their respect and gratitude to their teachers at the start of the academic year.

An important part of the Thai educational tradition, Wai Kru helps students connect with the values of appreciation, respect and community. During the ceremony, students presented flower garlands to their teachers and took part in a series of activities, including a quiz that added a fun element to the event.

For many students, the ceremony was also a chance to deepen their understanding of Thai culture. Year 7 student Phanida (Jayna) Sae-Chiu reflected on the experience, saying, “Taking part in Wai Kru helped me feel more connected to Thai culture. Presenting the flower garlands was a meaningful way to show respect to our teachers, and it was wonderful to see students from different backgrounds joining in and learning about this important tradition.”

The event was both enjoyable and memorable, reinforcing the importance of cultural understanding while celebrating the special relationship between students and teachers. As another school year begins, Wai Kru remains a valued tradition that helps keep Thai culture alive within the Bangkok Patana community.
