World Cultures through Bollywood
What better to start than with Bollywood?
In Year 1, World Cultures lessons have begun with a colourful burst of creativity as children start to explore India through a rich, hands-on curriculum.
World Cultures is part of our Year 1 programme for children who are not enrolled in the Thai language pathway. Across the year, they explore three different countries, chosen to reflect the diversity of our Bangkok Patana community and to help children develop a deeper understanding of the world around them.
The children started their World Cultures learning by exploring India in lively and creative ways. They explored where India is in the world, learned a little about language and spoke about what life can look like in different parts of the country.
This learning has recently come to life through Bollywood Dance! Children began by looking at images and sharing what they noticed, what they thought and what the dancing made them wonder. They then explored how music and movement are used to tell stories in Indian films and had great fun trying out Bollywood-style moves themselves. Working in small groups, the children are beginning to create their own short dances, building confidence, creativity and teamwork along the way.
Over the coming weeks, the children will continue their journey through India by learning about the colourful festival of Holi, exploring Indian food and spices and the artwork of Indian artist Jamini Roy.
Here’s a sneak preview into their learning:
