Art Core Skills: Academic Drawing

Participating in fine art traditions

Students from Years 10 – 12 have the opportunity to participate in the Art Core Skills ECA, which develops observational drawing skills by teaching academic drawing techniques. Students of Fine Art have been using academic drawing to hone their skills for centuries and students at Bangkok Patana School are finding it exciting to now take part in this tradition. They have begun the ECA using familiar still life objects, such as plants and mannequins, to practise their rendering of accurate proportion, tone and texture. As the class continues, students will be experimenting with more challenging subject matter, such as casts, and more complex props.

Later, students will work with a portrait model, which is always a memorable and enjoyable experience. In fact, for many students, this will be their first experience working with life portraiture. The skills they gain in these challenging lessons will support them in their Art and Design and Visual Arts coursework, in addition to building their personal creative portfolios for university applications. This setting also gives students the experience of working in a studio of mixed age ranges, learning from the older, and sometimes younger, students. Well done to our artists of the future for a strong start in this exciting field!
