Mighty Metals in Year 3

Resourceful and independent learners

Year 3 students are in their Mighty Metal unit of learning, for which they have been reading the classic story, “The Iron Man” by Ted Hughes. The book tells the tale of a lone figure, the Iron Man, who appears seemingly from nowhere and angers the local farmers by eating his way through all their metal machinery. Inspired by this story, Year 3 students were tasked with creating a friend for the lonely Iron Man.

Through their Design and Technology (D+T) lessons, students designed and created their own wooden friends for the Iron Man, complete with optional magnetic parts. Whilst the models may not rival the size of the Iron Man, the project does provide an exciting opportunity to use the specialised Primary D+T room. This encourages students to learn about the tools, materials and skills necessary for design, engineering, architecture and even handywork around the home. Developing their confidence in D+T at an early age encourages both resourcefulness and independence. We bet Iron Man is looking forward to meeting his many new friends!
